She contributes to the data science community by being a public speaker, encouraging women in technology, and actively contributes to Python open source projects (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Cheukting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Github Cheukting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Being a data ambassador in DataKind, she also provides data science solutions for charities. Cheuk is the co-author of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datasciencecentral.com\/profiles\/blogs\/new-book-enterprise-ai-an-applications-perspective\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enterprise AI &#8211; An Applications Perspective<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0published by Data Science Central and is also an invited guest expert at the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conted.ox.ac.uk\/courses\/data-science-for-the-internet-of-things-iot\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Oxford \u2013 Data Science for Internet of Things course<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for Time series and Python. Cheuk is also the co-leader of the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/meetu.ps\/c\/3nf8X\/5zWzb\/d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial Intelligence (AI) Club for Gender Minorities meetup<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in London.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are her experiences as a female data scientist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development and Tech<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My day goes typically 50% in meetings and 50% in coding. I tend to work with data i.e. analyse data. I typically use algorithms like XGBoost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hardest problem<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hardest technical problem I faced was in contributing to Numpy when I tried to fix a bug. It looked easy at first but at the end, it involved lots of low level fixes. It makes me appreciate the complexity behind the open source tools that I use every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am so glad to have a very supportive python community, the always<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/2018.pyconuk.org\/diversity-inclusion-accessibility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourage diversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/2018.pyconuk.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PyCon UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was the most caring conference that I have ever been. They encourage female speakers, have a full day workshop for women. They even un-label the toilet from gender by just labelling them toilet with urinal or without urinal.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Negative experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some stakeholders in the industry will doubt your ability because you are not their ideal &#8220;typical&#8221; data scientist. You have to fight to gain their trust and see beyond your look.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my previous job, I was introduced to a stakeholder for a project. It\u2019s very obvious that he doubted my ability as I am a woman. I feel that it\u2019s a struggle that all women in the industry have and I will not be shy to stand up and speak for myself. I decided to \u00a0told him that I just came back from a major Python conference which I was speaking at. I impressed him even though he found it hard to believe initially!<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What keeps you motivated<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiosity and the community keep me motivated. Curiosity about new knowledge and to learn new stuff \u2013 and also to contribute and get inspiration form the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advice and Insights<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>On coding:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep good coding practice (write comments, keep code clean, don&#8217;t rush)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; if you are using Python, follow PEP8<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>On women in Data Science:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; don&#8217;t afraid to voice out and stand for yourself &#8211; don&#8217;t under estimate your ability<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who inspires you?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I spoke at the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/ox-fest.org\/%20https:\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Archer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OxFEST evet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I had the pleasure of hearing the keynote from<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Archer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Mary Archer\u00a0<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was inspiring. OxFEST (Oxford Females in Engineering, Science, and Technology) is a 1,300-member society at the University of Oxford promoting and supporting women in science, engineering and technology. Dame Mary Doreen Archer is a British scientist specialising in solar power conversion.
