Can design sprints work for Artificial Intelligence applications?<\/p>\n Last week, for the first time, I attended a meetup on Design Sprints( The Design Sprint Underground<\/a>)<\/p>\n I had heard of Design sprints from Google \u2013 but I am not an expert. The organiser, Eran, created a good atmosphere (as he called it Israeli style interaction ) i.e. oriented to spontaneous discussion \u2013 which benefitted the meeting.<\/p>\n Background<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n I had heard of the idea of Design Sprint<\/a>s\u00a0from folks at Google and based on the book – Sprint: How To Solve Big Problems and Test New Ideas in Just Five Days<\/a><\/p>\n As per Google about Design sprints<\/a> \u00a0A design sprint is “a process for answering critical business questions through design, prototyping, and testing”\u00a0that allows product owners to have\u00a0“a shortcut to learning without building and launching a minimal viable product<\/em>“. \u00a0Design sprints have got some traction<\/a> already<\/p>\n Design sprints involve a five-day process<\/p>\n Day 1.\u00a0Mapping the problem and pick a focus area Does this process apply to AI applications?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n So, my question is: Does this strategy work in building AI applications?<\/p>\n Its tempting to suffix everything with \u2018AI\u2019<\/p>\n But that would be superficial.<\/p>\n In a purist sense, if we consider AI as \u2018based on Deep Learning\u2019 \u2013 and hence, by definition, based on the idea of automatic feature detection from data (typically unstructured data)<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n AI applications are complex and when viewed in this way, the idea of design sprints have some limitations as applied to AI.<\/p>\n However,<\/p>\n To conclude<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n It would be simplistic to apply design sprints to chatbots and claim that design sprints support AI. I believe much work needs to be done.
