It\u2019s important to note, however, that the BLS categorizes data scientist roles within a broader category: computer and information research scientists. This means salary data for data scientist roles also falls under the broader category of computer and information research scientists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data scientist \u2014 a job that includes making sense of large amounts of unstructured data \u2014\u00a0was the No. 1 \u201cbest job\u201d in America in 2018 because of its high salary, the number of job openings, and strong job satisfaction, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/media\/9-best-jobs-in-america-for-2018\/10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBS News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/data-scientist-best-job-in-us-right-now-2018-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stories. The role was also ranked as the best job three years in a row, since 2016, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/List\/Best-Jobs-in-America-LST_KQ0,20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glassdoor.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But most data scientist jobs require an advanced degree, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.berkeley.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an online data science master\u2019s<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">degree. That doesn\u2019t mean you can only work at a tech company. The diversity of industries that hire data scientists continues to surge. As the power of data grows \u2014 increasing the need for predictive analytics and machine learning models \u2014 just about every industry is seeing the need to hire its own team of data scientists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The\u00a0Emerging Field of Data Science<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data scientist is one of the fastest-growing job titles in the country. Companies are racing to hire people who can manage large databases and extract insights important for business, government, and academia. The ability to work with large, unstructured data sets and extract vital insights is a desired attribute for a worker. The need for data scientists is so strong that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/computer-and-information-technology\/computer-and-information-research-scientists.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predicts that future job growth in the field will be three times faster than for all jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most data scientists (40 percent) work on the West Coast, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burtchworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Burtch-Works-Study_DS-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burtch Works,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an executive recruiting firm, followed by 26 percent working in the Northeast, 16 percent in the Midwest, 10 percent in the Mountain region, and 8 percent in the Southeast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the five states with the most data scientists currently on the job:<\/p>\n<div class=\"grid grid--justify u--ac u--p2\">\n<div class=\"cell span-3--tablet\"><span class=\"display-6\">California<\/span><\/p>\n<p>with 5,750<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell span-2--tablet\"><span class=\"display-6\">Virgina<\/span><\/p>\n<p>with 2,670<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell span-2--tablet\"><span class=\"display-6\">Maryland<\/span><\/p>\n<p>with 2,660<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell span-2--tablet\"><span class=\"display-6\">Texas<\/span><\/p>\n<p>with 2,170<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell span-2--tablet\"><span class=\"display-6\">Washington<\/span><\/p>\n<p>with 1,340<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burtch Works also reported that the median data scientist salary was highest along the coasts. But the pay difference is narrowing \u2014 a sign of high demand for qualified data scientists.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"u--pt1\">Data Scientist Salaries by State<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay for data scientists varies by state and region. Data scientists in California \u2014 home to Silicon Valley \u2014 are paid well. But so are data scientists in states such as Virginia, where the median for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data scientist salary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is slightly higher than in California. Scroll to the bottom of the page to take a closer look at median salary of data scientists by state.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>States that did not have median wage data were: Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.<\/p>\n<h2>Top Companies with High Data Science Salaries<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For data scientists interested in plenty of opportunities, tech companies offer many of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you don\u2019t need to move to Silicon Valley to find a data scientist job. Tech companies outside Silicon Valley like 23andMe and Lenovo hire data scientists too<a id=\"2-copy\"><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.berkeley.edu\/blog\/recent.atom\/#2-source\">2<\/a><\/sup>. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data scientist salary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for those jobs is mostly above $100,000 and in some cases close to $200,000 a year \u2014 or even higher for uniquely qualified individuals working in specialized roles. Not interested in tech? Fifty-nine percent of all data science and analytics job demand was found in finance, insurance, and professional services industries, according to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-01.ibm.com\/common\/ssi\/cgi-bin\/ssialias?htmlfid=IML14576USEN&#038;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IBM study from 2017.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State and federal governments are major employers of data scientists too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are varied opportunities at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/jobs\/view\/business-intelligence-analyst-at-state-of-montana-919399183\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montana\u2019s Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Helena, Montana, or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City Department of Health,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which has an environmental data scientist analyzing data for restaurant food safety inspections and mobile food permitting.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data scientists can also be found at the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligencecareers.gov\/nsa\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National Security Agency i<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n Fort Meade, Maryland. The Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C., also has data scientists on its staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies that you might not think of as traditional \u201ctech companies\u201d are also looking for data scientists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"u--pb1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=walmart+%22data+scientist%22+position&#038;rlz=1C1GCEB_enUS807US807&#038;oq=walmart+%22data+scientist%22+position&#038;aqs=chrome..69i57j0.5039j0j4&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walmart<\/a> has data scientists at its headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, and its Walmart Labs facility in Silicon Valley.<\/li>\n<li class=\"u--pb1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?rlz=1C1GCEB_enUS807US807&#038;q=procter+and+gamble+%22data+scientist%22+position&#038;spell=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=0ahUKEwj7wevu-tLiAhUHcq0KHe3FCp4QBQgrKAA&#038;biw=1282&#038;bih=681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Procter &#038; Gamble, maker of Bounty paper towels and Crest toothpaste, has data scientists in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Boston,<\/a> among other places.<\/li>\n<li class=\"u--pb1\">Wall Street firms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?rlz=1C1GCEB_enUS807US807&#038;ei=pHjTW5y-HaW1ggfoz6OQCg&#038;q=goldman+sachs+%22data+scientist%22+position&#038;oq=goldman+sachs+%22data+scientist%22+position&#038;gs_l=psy-ab.3...16467.18461..18604...0.0..0.99.927.13......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71j0i7i30j33i10.BTT99hmd2yM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> have data scientists crunching information in New York.<\/li>\n<li class=\"u--pb1\">Video game companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ea.com\/careers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Electronic Arts<\/a> hire data scientists.<\/li>\n<li class=\"u--pb1\">Insurance companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/geico.referrals.selectminds.com\/jobs\/data-scientist-8422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geico<\/a> are hiring data scientists.<\/li>\n<li class=\"u--pb1\">Credit unions and banks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellsfargojobs.com\/job\/-\/-\/1251\/9750305?utm_source=Indeed&#038;utm_medium=organic&#038;utm_campaign=Indeed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wells Fargo<\/a> are hiring data scientists too.<\/li>\n<li class=\"u--pb1\">Hospitals across the country, including major medical institutions, are hiring data scientists <a id=\"3-copy\"><\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.berkeley.edu\/blog\/recent.atom\/#3-source\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li>And as data becomes more important in the discovery of new medical treatments, medical companies and drug companies <a id=\"4-copy\"><\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.berkeley.edu\/blog\/recent.atom\/#4-source\">4<\/a><\/sup> also want data scientists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to find industries that don\u2019t employ data scientists.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Factors to Boost Your Data Science Salary<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A college degree is often required to become a data scientist, and having an advanced education helps. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.berkeley.edu\/\">online master\u2019s in data science degree<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, can help individuals strengthen technical skill sets and gain a competitive advantage in the job market. About three-quarters of data scientists have a master\u2019s degree or doctorate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other studies put the number even higher: Ninety-one percent of data scientists have a master\u2019s degree or Ph.D., <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Burtch Works.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data scientists mostly come from math and science backgrounds. More than eight in 10 data scientists studied mathematics or statistics, computer science, natural science, or engineering, according to Burtch Works, which means having a background in any of these interdisciplinary fields can only help as you negotiate pay. And for those interested in moving into management, a data scientist manager can earn 5 to 15 percent more than a data scientist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data scientists need to be able to toggle between the technical world of computer science and the industry they are working in \u2014 practically applying what they know within an organization. For example, a data scientist working at a hospital will pull different, unique insights than a data scientist working at an investment firm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to understanding the mechanics of a specific industry, knowing how to use different computer programming languages is also important for a data scientist. The most popular computer programming languages are SQL, Python, R, Bash, and JavaScript and Java. But there are hundreds of languages that might be used by programmers at different times in their careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data scientists are responsible for building and maintaining relational databases such as MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle, which are the top relational databases. Hadoop is software for storing, digesting, and distributing data. And of course, being able to pull, train, and model data to make predictions and potentially feed it to a machine to make faster predictions for the future is and should be part of every data scientist\u2019s core set of skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s no surprise that according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oreilly.com\/data\/free\/2017-data-science-salary-survey.csp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O\u2019Reilly industry survey:<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"grid u--p2\">\n<div class=\"cell span-6--tablet span-12 u--ac\"><span class=\"display-6\">67%<\/span><\/p>\n<p>of data scientists reported a major involvement with \u201cbasic exploratory data analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell span-6--tablet span-12 u--ac\"><span class=\"display-6\">61%<\/span><\/p>\n<p>said they \u201cconduct data analysis to answer research questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the third most popular responsibility was \u201ccommunicate findings to business decision makers,\u201d a task commonly found in any professional role but for data scientists, communicating findings to stakeholders requires a unique level of flexibility and technical skills. Data scientists clean complex data sets and ultimately interact with the data from inception to the point where they disseminate critical information in a language others will understand. Data scientists who can effectively combine their statistical, computer science, and business acumen will be a valuable asset in an organization.<\/p>\n<h2>Where Do Data Scientists Work?<\/h2>\n<p>Tech companies may employ many data scientists, but only 26 percent of respondents to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oreilly.com\/data\/free\/2017-data-science-salary-survey.csp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O\u2019Reilly Data Science Salary Survey 2017<\/a> said they worked in traditional tech industries.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the top responses for where data
