A Teleoperated Robot-Assisted Surgeon may utilize Machine Learning algorithms spanning Text \/ Language, Vision, and Voice.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Using&nbsp;<strong>Vision ML<\/strong>&nbsp;algorithms to identify vital organs and blood vessels, such an AI system may leverage&nbsp;<strong>Voice ML<\/strong>&nbsp;algorithms to translate the human surgeon&#8217;s instructions to onsite medical assistants who may be in a different country speaking a different language, which may require&nbsp;<strong>Text ML<\/strong>&nbsp;algorithms for real-time language translations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Okay, I am sold on Machine Learning and ready to write some term sheets.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Let&#8217;s take a step back first.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With so many failing Tech companies like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.magicleap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Magic Leap<\/a>&nbsp;claiming they use Machine Learning, it&rsquo;s probably best if you first read up on my list of&nbsp;<strong>Red Flags&nbsp;<\/strong>from the hundreds of meetings and pitches I have personally been involved in for AI\/ML startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Red Flags during Founder Meetings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Armed with the understanding of the&nbsp;<strong>realistic&nbsp;<\/strong>applications of Machine Learning and the&nbsp;<strong>practical&nbsp;<\/strong>investable themes (<strong>Text<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Vision<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Voice<\/strong>), you&#8217;re now ready to evaluate the mountain of Tech startups that are claiming they&#8217;re &#8220;AI \/ ML-enabled.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My approach to deal screening is a technique borrowed from Greek&nbsp;<strong>Stoicism<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By subtracting what we don&#8217;t know from something, we can actually progress much faster to gaining a true understanding of what that something claims itself to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Let&#8217;s apply that to&nbsp;<strong>Venture Capital<\/strong>&nbsp;deal screening of startups in Machine Learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/storage.ning.com\/topology\/rest\/1.0\/file\/get\/5494937669?profile=original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.ning.com\/topology\/rest\/1.0\/file\/get\/5494937669?profile=RESIZE_710x\" width=\"750\" class=\"align-center\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Source: Radna Intellectual Ventures; Machine Learning Meeting Red Flags.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Here are my&nbsp;<strong>Red Flags<\/strong>&nbsp;during your meetings with Founders.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">One of the Co-Founders doesn&#8217;t have a&nbsp;<strong>technical educational background<\/strong>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stemkidsnyc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">STEM<\/a>. Machine Learning is very hard to &#8220;pick up&#8221; &ndash; unless you&#8217;re are a genius, it is something you have to absorb during your formative college years of learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Founders who drink their own&nbsp;<strong>Kool-Aid<\/strong>&nbsp;with a&nbsp;<em>poor grasp of reality<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The presentation contains frequent use of&nbsp;<strong>buzzwords&nbsp;<\/strong>like &ldquo;Artificial Intelligence&rdquo;, &ldquo;AI-powered&rdquo;, &ldquo;ML-enabled&rdquo;, &ldquo;Smart&rdquo;, Super-Intelligent&rdquo;, and variations\/combinations of these words.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Founders (commonly the CTO) who are purely focused on&nbsp;<strong>scientific research<\/strong>&nbsp;and have not thought about how to commercialize their machine learning technology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Founders who don&#8217;t understand the&nbsp;<strong>limitations of Machine Learning.<\/strong>&nbsp;For example, claiming that Machine Learning can write novel patent applications based on an analysis of prior patent literature is poppycock with current ML research.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Founders with&nbsp;<strong>low exit barriers&nbsp;<\/strong>or&nbsp;<strong>downside risk<\/strong>, namely Founders with little equity in their business or something to fall back on (high-net-worth or another job).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Any pitch that claims they have achieved&nbsp;<strong>Artificial General Intelligence&nbsp;<\/strong>or&nbsp;<strong>AGI&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; this is the holy grail. If they did discover AGI, they wouldn&#8217;t be talking with you &ndash; they would be using their AGI to make a lot of money in the financial markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Towards Artificial General Intelligence<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Strong AI,<\/strong>&nbsp;also known as Artificial General Intelligence, is the idea that machine intelligence will someday equal and surpass human intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Assuming Strong AI is true<\/em>&nbsp;&ndash; and this is still a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Emperor%27s_New_Mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">questionable<\/a>&nbsp;assumption &ndash; what is the path towards mankind&#8217;s ancient dream to create intelligence?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Several seminal ideas in deep learning are based on building on the architectures of the neural networks we described above, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thispersondoesnotexist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Generative Adversarial Networks<\/a>&nbsp;(<strong>GANs<\/strong>),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_short-term_memory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Long Short-Term Memory Networks<\/a>&nbsp;(<strong>LTSM<\/strong>), and in general ideas of&nbsp;<strong>attention<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>transfer learning<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>meta-learning<\/strong>, and the paradigm shift from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supervised_learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">supervised learning<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>self-play<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">For example, the most seminal achievement in Machine Learning occurred when an AI agent called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/blog\/article\/alphago-zero-starting-scratch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>AlphaGo<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>defeated the top-ranked human player in Go (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AlphaGo_versus_Lee_Sedol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Lee Sedol<\/a>) after just three days of teaching itself a game that is exponentially more difficult to master than chess.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/storage.ning.com\/topology\/rest\/1.0\/file\/get\/5494952895?profile=original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.ning.com\/topology\/rest\/1.0\/file\/get\/5494952895?profile=RESIZE_710x\" width=\"750\" class=\"align-center\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Source: Associated Press;&nbsp;Lee Sedol was defeated in 2016 by AlphaGo, an AI agent created by Google&#8217;s DeepMind, and upgraded to a self-play version known as AlphaGo Zero.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><em>So the future of Machine Learning will be unsupervised learning where an AI agent will teach itself the ability to build and improve its own architecture and I&#8217;d argue, not based on any reward function defined by humans &ndash;
